1. In baptism Jesus was identifying Himself with the sinners, to save the mankind through His death. He had to represent the whole humanity.
2. The baptism of Jesus was a shadow of His death and resurrection which was to follow.
3. Jesus became obedient even to the death of the cross for the sake of human salvation. Jesus, through baptism, was demonstrating His implicit obedience Hebrews 10:9. That’s why the Heavenly Father spoke from Heaven: “He is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased”.
4. Jesus set an example for us to follow. Jesus identified Himself with humanity in baptism whereas we come into union with His death and resurrection through baptism Romans 6:4,5. If Jesus showed His obedience to God through baptism, we must also demonstrate our obedience to God through baptism. But we have to bear one thing in mind that Jesus’ baptism is different from ours.
